Liberty Hops are an extension of the Hallertau family of hops and were bred in 1983 from Hallertauer Mittlefrüh and a disease (Downy Mildew, Verticillium Wilt) resistant male, otherwise known as USDA 64035M. Liberty has some notable relatives, as it is half sister to Ultra, Mt. HoodHops, and Crystal Hops.

Liberty Hops are an aroma variety with an alpha acid rating of 3%-6%. This variety, which was released in 1991 is likened to other noble hop varieties, and comes with a delicate floral bouquet that has essence of spice.

Liberty Hops are used in many different fashions and in many styles of beer. It will contribute bitterness at the beginning of a boil, and is used in that capacity often. Liberty is more aggressive on the aroma contribution late in the boil, as it comes equipped with high levels of humulene and caryophyllene oil. Humulene provides the earthy spice and withstands heat better than caryophyllene, which is known for its essence of grapes, peaches, and vanilla.

"a noble new world hop'

Liberty Hops are widely used in many beers. The yield for Liberty is very low, and the medium compact cones come early to mid season after a vigorous growth cycle.
